Upon reading this passage, I noticed two important messages that the author emphasized. The first message explained the significance of books, and how they impact a substantial amount of lives. Roxane Gay also points out that non-fictional books can be very relatable, describing their importance in her childhood. The ability of created characters to give the youth hope, including Roxane Gay, further proves the importance of books. The second message that Roxane Gay emphasized was the power of nostalgia. Roxane Gay wrote on her affection for the past as a power, as she wished to live in Sweet Valley and be one of the Wakefield twins.

Personally, this writing had an effect on me, as it brought back childhood memories of reading fictional stories and wishing to be in the lives of the story characters. Reading fictional books consumed a large portion of my childhood so it is easy to relate to that perspective of Roxane Gay’s passage. As I got older, I began to read much less than I did as a child, especially in the fictional genre, resulting in me having much less fictional thoughts and aspirations in comparison to the author. I am convinced that this essay would have an effect within the community that I am in, as a significant number of children could relate to the feelings that Roxane Gay had towards books and fictional stories.
